Annisul Huq passes away
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq died at Wellington Hospital in London at 10:23pm BdST on Thursday. He was 65.
The city corporation in a media statement on Thursday night said the mayor’s body would be flown to Dhaka on Saturday morning.
He would be buried at Banani Graveyard after a namaz-e-janaza at the Army Stadium the same day, the city corporation said. It also urged the people to pray for the peace of
the departed soul.
Earlier on Thursday, Annisul’s wife Rubana Huq told bdnews24.com that his condition worsened a day after he was put under intensive care unit (ICU) at the hospital.
On Tuesday, the mayor was moved to the ICU after he was ‘down with infection’.
He flew to the UK for family purposes on July 29.
While going through medical tests at a hospital in London in mid-August, he lost consciousness and was taken to the ICU.
Doctors had diagnosed him with cerebral vasculitis – an inflammation of the blood vessel wall involving the brain.
Annisul Huq was elected Dhaka North City Corporation mayor on a ruling Awami League ticket in 2015.
He had served as president of Bangladesh’s apex trade body FBCCI during the military-backed caretaker administration.
Prior to that, he also headed the trade body of apparel makers and exporters, BGMEA.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday night expressed profound shock at the death of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq.
The President in a condolence message said, “The nation has lost an eminent businessman and a successful industrialist with the death of Annisul . . . His death is really an irreparable loss for the country.”
He prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
In a message of condolence, the Prime Minister said, “Annisul has made his place in the hearts of the common people through his public-welfare and service-oriented work.” Through the death of this people-oriented mayor, the country and the nation have lost a devoted public representative, she said.
The Prime Minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her deep sympathy to the bereaved family members. -Agencies
