Mr. Annisul Huq, Former President SAARC CCI & FBCCI, elected as first mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation

Mr Annisul Huq, Former President, SAARC CCI from Bangladesh became the first mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation. Mr. Huq with his ‘table clock’ electoral symbol bagged 460,117 votes against his nearest rival BNP-backed Tabith Mohammed Awal son of another former FBCCI president Mr. Abdul Awal Mintoo, received 325,080 votes for his ‘bus’ symbol.

The three mayors Mr. Annisul Huq of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Mr. Sayeed Khokon of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Mr. AJM Nasir Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) have taken oath in a simple ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Mr. Huq expressed his gratitude to the voters who cast their votes in favour of him and also to those who campaigned for him. Expressing his resolve to build a neat and clean city, the newly elected DNCC mayor sought cooperation of all in reshaping the city. He urged the city dwellers to come up with their suggestions for the development of the city not with any personal request. He added that he would be working for building a liveable city through taking short-, mid- and long-term programmes.

Around nearly 2.35 million voters in this city corporation, 874,581 cast their votes. The election to this city corporation took place along with Dhaka South and Chittagong city corporations.

Altogether 16 people were contending for the office of the mayor of Dhaka North in its first election after the Dhaka City Corporation’s bifurcation in November 2011.
